S4 Handling Bitumen Products

Always wear appropriate PPE suited to the product you are using.

When spraying bitumen emulsion gloves and glasses must be worn and sleeves rolled down.

When spraying and or handling hot bitumen products Face shield (in the down position), Balaclava, heat proof chemical gloves, Long Sleeve Cotton Shirt and Long pants must be worn.

When using Chemicals appropriate PPE as required on the product SDS must be worn (SDS’s must be reviewed prior to using any chemical to ensure correct controls are implemented).

When handling asphalt products long sleeves, long pants, heat proof lace up steel cap boots must be worn and gloves should be worn where skin contact could be made.

Asphalt products are between 150 to 180 degrees Celsius. Avoid contact with skin.

Spray Sealing bitumen products are between 150 and 200 degrees Celsius, when within 15 meters of hot bitumen application full body PPE must be worn including,
1. Face shield in the down position
2. Long sleeve and long cotton clothing
3. Balaclava
4. Heat proof gloves

Dangerous goods licensed operators are to load unload and/or transport hot bitumen products.
